Yaffa Grill: Our New Favorite Spot

zDSC05454

If Fred Flintstone  was on Colonel Glenn Highway, he would say "Yaffa Gotta Do !" ...and guess what, he would be right. Yaffa Grill can be summed up as "simply exotic."   It has worldly tastes of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine that are as authentic as they are delicious.  At the same time they serve the food on paper or styrofoam plates.  You see?  Simple and exotic.  Superfry & the Big Ragu have tagged this as our new favorite eatery, and have been visiting the 2 Yaffa locations with some frequency. Want an authentic, unique Food Adventure that is affordable and fun?  Then … [Read more...]

Superfry & the Big Ragu make Pizza at Johnny’s Slice of New York

image

A day in the life of a FOOD ADVENTURER may include using culinary skills from time to time.  When Johnny's Slice of NY Pizzeria in Centerville approached us about being "Guest Pizza Makers" for a day, we jumped at the chance.  We have enjoyed Johnny's food, from their pizza to their calzones, so we couldn't wait to toss a few pies for fun. Owners Johnny and Michelle Rivera asked us to develop our own special pizza that would be added to their menu.  We came up with the "MANHATTAN SPLITSVILLE" pizza, which is any 3 toppings on each half of the pie.  The event took place on Sunday, January … [Read more...]

Superfry & the Big Ragu Get Twisted at K & R Pretzel Bakery

We love K & R Pretzels

If you did not know where to look, you would never find K & R Pretzel Bakery.   Someone must be finding this place, because since 1967, the Pretzel Bakery has been making Daytonians smile.   Tucked into a neighborhood on Flesher Avenue in Kettering, it is one of the most interesting Food Adventures we have ever done.   What's not to love about this place?  It is a humble building with a great product and a great price.  The operation is based on a huge soft pretzel making machine which cooks the tremendous snacks on a conveyor belt.   Simple huh?  Make good pretzels,  and they will come.  … [Read more...]

Every couple of weeks, your humble FOOD ADVENTURERS will give you "SMALL BITES,"   a quick feature of some restaurant items that we love. SMALL BITES - 1/6/2012 includes these favorite cravings in the Dayton Area: THE FRESH CUT FRIES at PENN STATION EAST COAST SUBS: Freshly cut, and just out of the fryer, there is something about these "skin-on" french fried potatoes.  Maybe it is because the potatoes are fried in cholesterol-free peanut oil.  Whether you dip them in ketchup, splash some vinegar on them, or eat them plain, these tasty treats always hit the spot!  There is one … [Read more...]

Superfry & the Big Ragu Dive Into Papi’s by the Lake

Superfry and Ragu with Mike "Papi" Hatfield

What do you get when you cross an abandoned school gymnasium in the Waynesville/Harveysburg area and a veteran of butcher of 40 years.  No, this is not the plot of a bad horror movie, but an incredibly unique restaurant called Papi's by the Lake.  Located near Caesar's Creek, as in salad, this "everything from scratch" restaurant is located in the antique, sauerkraut and Renaissance Festival mecca of the world.   Superfry and the Big Ragu will now think of good food when we hear the words Waynesville or Harveysburg. For the past couple of months, our friend Kim has been telling us that we … [Read more...]

Superfry & The Big Ragu Cross Paths with the Hamburger Wagon

burg

In the past few years, we have noticed an influx of restaurants in Dayton claiming to sell “gourmet” hamburgers.   Many of these places allow you to add fried eggs, avocados, and even fried pickles to your burger for an additional cost.  We have enjoyed Food Adventures while pigging out of these places of course, but Superfry and the Big Ragu are simple creatures, who like their burgers made simple.  If you are like us and want a great “old school” style hamburger, you need to head down to the Hamburger Wagon in downtown Miamisburg, Ohio.  The little white cart with the red awning is an … [Read more...]

Superfry and The Big Ragu visit the legendary Hasty Tasty Pancake House

Betty, our waitress, has worked at Hasty Tasty since 1974

Remember back in the day when waitresses used to be "real" waitresses?  When you had a server that made waitressing her career and was a staple at the restaurant for decades?  Well this type of throwback place still exists in Dayton, it is called the Hasty Tasty Pancake House.  This place also reminds us of the good old days because we ordered a ton of food, and the price was still cheap. "Bunny's Hasty Tasty Pancake House" has been in business for 59 years.  Located on Linden Ave in Dayton, memorabilia still hangs on the wall from the early days of this restaurant.  The atmosphere felt … [Read more...]

Superfry & The Big Ragu Gear up for the 2011 Festival Season

The Big Ragu & Superfry love the Gyro's at Dayton's Greek Fest

Let's face it, summer is over.   Many are bummed over the fact that the outdoor dining patios are closing, and they have no more days left at the pool.  Ragu is no longer laying out topless, scaring young kids, and Superfry has put his sparkly silver thong into his storage chest.  But the end of summer also brings some good news: Fall Festival Season is upon us !! We absolutely love festivals, and the fall is our favorite time as the big dogs of the fest world make their appearance.  Two of our favorite festivals,The Greek Fest and The Italian Festival kick off the fall season. Why … [Read more...]

Superfry & The Big Ragu’s take on “Little Saigon” Restaurant

Ragu and Superfry with Nga, owner of Little Saigon Restaurant

When most people think of Vietnam, they think of war, Nixon, and hippies.  Superfry and the Big Ragu, however, immediately think of food.   In 1980, a few years after Communism took over Vietnam, Little Saigon's owner fled to the United States.   She jumped into a crowded boat with 85 other people and sailed for 12 days with little food or water until arriving in a free area of the Philippines and eventually to America.  Her name is Nga, pronounced "na," and she is running the family owned restaurant that her sister started 19 years ago.   We are blessed to have her fine cooking in the Dayton … [Read more...]
